2012-2013 Academic Year Announcements

Welcome back for the 2012-2013 Academic Year. Here is a short list of the major changes for this academic year. If you have any questions, please submit a ticket online at http://cias-helpdesk.rit.edu.

Free Software for Students:

  • Go Here and join the Autodesk Community to Access Free* student downloads http://students.autodesk.com/
  • *Free products are subject to the terms and conditions of the end-user license and services agreement that accompanies the software. The software is for personal use for education purposes and is not intended for classroom or lab use.

    SOFTWARE CHANGES:


    Operating System:

    • Macs — All computers are moving to Mac OS X Lion 10.7.x. Mountain Lion is on hold until further notice.
    • PCs — Windows 7 (no change)

    Popular Software Suites

    • Adobe Suite — All versions have been updated to the latest release of 6.0.
    • Apple Final Cut Pro — FCP 7 is no longer available and has been removed. FCP X is now the standard Apple Pro editing suite
    • AutoDesk Software — 2013 versions will be deployed to the labs for the start of Fall. Please make a request for the software to be applied to your computer.
    • Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac — Installed in all Mac labs. It is recommeneded that users of 2008 be updated at their earliest convenience. Please make an appointment via http://cias-helpdesk.rit.edu

2011-2012 Academic Year Announcements

SOFTWARE CHANGES:


Operating System:

  • Macs — will remain on Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Mac OS X LION is on hold until incompatibilities with key software suites are resolved.
  • PCs — Windows 7

Popular Software Suites

  • Adobe Suite — All versions have been updated to the latest release of 5.5. Mac users will be notified before installation starts. Windows users have to make an appointment for update to be applied.
  • Apple Final Cut Pro — FCP 7 will remain in the labs where it was installed before. FCP X will be added to New Media Lab and various SOFA areas. If you would like more information, please ask by submitting a ticket online.

PaperCut and Checkout Portal (SPAS Students)

NO MORE WAITING AT THE CAGE TO PUT MONEY ON YOUR PAPERCUT ACCOUNT!!!! 😉

There is now a new link from the Checkout Portal; https://checkout.cias.rit.edu/ that will allow you to put money on your Print Account (PaperCut) with your Visa or Mastercard. Simply go to the checkout portal link, noted above, click on MyPapercut then click on ADD MONEY. Simply follow the prompts from there.

You also now have quick and easy access to a running history of all of your PaperCut transactions and will receive email verification of every PaperCut Credit Card transaction you make. read more

CIAS Web Services Upgrades

On March 2nd 2011 we upgraded our web server, along most of the system software being upgraded, PHP has been updated to PHP 5.3.x

Version 5.3 of PHP bring a slew of changes, most notably the addition of a Deprecated error message if your web application uses functions which are being phased out in future versions of PHP you will receive a warning message.

CIAS Computer Services Outage on Monday (11/23)

CIAS computer services will be unavailable this Monday (November 23) starting at 8:30 AM. The outage should conclude by the end of business Monday, but due to the nature of all outages, services availability may resume later than expected.

This outage will NOT affect your access to e-mail, STARS, SIS, or Oracle!

This outage is necessary to allow FMS to finish electrical upgrades in our 7A data center. Immediately following the outage computer services availability may be intermittent as we perform routine system and security updates. read more

CIAS has upgraded back to Extensis Universal Type Server and Universal Type Client as our font management solution. This will allow us to distribute the various font libraries throughout the college uniformly and securely.

Please download the following form to find out how to use the software and access the various libraries. Please remember that each school has a specific set of fonts; please use only the fonts licensed to your school. read more

SPRING QUARTER: Font Management through Suitcase X1

We will be rolling back to Extensis Suitcase X1 server for CIAS (primarily affecting SPM and SOD) for Spring Quarter. All fonts that were available before will be available this quarter as well, but only through the X1 Client app. Please contact CIASTech with any questions.

OpenType fonts available for SOD

Updated OpenType versions of the SOD Font Folio have been put into the FONTS volume. These fonts are for ACADEMIC use only! The legacy PostScript versions that have been available in the past will remain available until the end of Winter Quarter 082. Please contact CIASTech with any questions.
